HDPE is high-density polyethylene, a versatile petroleum-based plastic commonly used in the manufacture of personal care products, food, and beverage bottles.
Today, the most commonly used material for the packaging of personal care products, such as lotions, body washes, shampoos, and conditioners, is HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Unlike PET products, HDPE is often white and opaque, giving the products greater UV protection. It is also resistant to temperatures from -148 to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. HDPE is lightweight but strong, impact-resistant, and flexible enough to accommodate squeezing products.
HDPE has the recycle symbol 2 and is FDA approved for food, liquids, and pharmaceuticals. It does not contain BPA or phthalates. It is also 100% recyclable, but it is heavier and uses more raw materials than PET, resulting in a slightly higher carbon footprint.
